Florida KidCare parent speaks about Medicaid

Watch Gracie Fowler, 35, a single mother of two living in Orlando, discuss the importance of Medicaid, part of the Florida KidCare program, and how it is the only chance for her children to have health insurance. Gracie also discusses barriers that have caused fluctuations in her coverage that concern her.

As a recent college graduate from Rollins College, Gracie accepted a job with a title agency near her home. Her annual income is below $23,000 and she is benefitting from having her children insured by Florida KidCare. Gracie is "thankful" for having access to the program and is satisfied with the access to care and doctors her children see, but she is unhappy with the administration of the program. Fluctuations in Gracie's income that were out of her control resulted in both children being listed ineligible for Florida KidCare. She was unaware of this and only discovered it when she took her son to the doctor for a severe stomach virus. Thankfully, the children's regular physician agreed to treat her son even though her insurance was no longer active. Similar instances have continued for years as her kids have been dropped several times. Gracie said there is very little assistance other than an online form with a 30-day turn-around time. At this time, Gracie's children are covered again and she will work hard to make sure it stays that way. A streamlined application process and direct assistance by outreach workers would have greatly benefitted this family.
