Coordinated by The Birth Place in Winter Garden and supported by Central Florida Friends of Midwives, midwives and supporters are walking and rallying to raise awareness in support of International Midwives Day and to tackle global inequalities in maternal and newborn health.
Over 340,000 women die each year, with millions more suffering infection and disability, as a result of preventable maternal causes. The International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) is committed to reducing inequality, through greater access to essential midwifery care worldwide, in developing countries where 90% of maternal deaths occur, as well as in the USA where maternal mortality is rising.
On May 5, 2011 at 6pm Orlando City Commissioner Samuel Ings will address midwives, mothers and supporters in a rally at Lake Eola Amphitheatre in Orlando starting at 6 pm to mark International Day of the Midwife.
Also speaking at the launch midwife and owner of The Birth Place Jennie Joseph said, "The world needs midwives more than ever. Access to essential midwifery services reduces maternal and infant mortality and reduces the cycle of poverty in developing countries. We want to demonstrate our commitment to tackling maternal and newborn mortality by standing shoulder to shoulder with midwives and mothers around the world. While inequalities are a global issue, we also want to raise awareness of local challenges. Right here in Florida the health of mothers and babies is being compromised due to lack of insurance, shortage of providers and reduced funding for health programs. We want to see mothers and babies getting the support they need through increased global and local commitment to midwifery and women's health services."
The rally on the 5th of May is the start of a journey that finishes at the International Confederation of Midwives Congress in Durban, South Africa, a global gathering where 3000 midwives will share evidence of what works to reduce maternal mortality and improve the care and support available to mothers and newborns around the world.
Other events this Mother's Day weekend supporting the journey to Durban includes the US TV Broadcast premiere on Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) of "No Woman, No Cry" on Saturday, May 7 at 9:30. In her gripping directorial debut, Christy Turlington Burns shares the powerful stories of at-risk pregnant women in four parts of the world, including a remote Massai tribe in Tanzania, a slum of Bangladesh, a post-abortion care ward in Guatemala, and a prenatal clinic in the United States - The Birth Place of Winter Garden.
Kimberly Seals-Allers will be at The Birth Place on Saturday, May 7 in Winter Garden for a book signing for her books in the Mocha Manual series. Kimberly is an award-winning business journalist and founder and editor-in-chief of MochaManual.com, a weekly online magazine for moms of color.

The Birth Place birthing center provides a service to the local Orlando area community by offering quality maternity care for women, with a focus on family involvement. As Clinical Director of The Birth Place (www.thebirthplace.org) in Winter Garden, Florida, Ms. Jennie Joseph offers prenatal and postpartum exams along with an onsite birthing facility for healthy, low-risk women. British-trained and educated in the early 1980's Joseph has been a Florida resident since 1989. The Birth Place has grown over the last eleven years and currently serves around one hundred pregnant women a week, with approximately 300 deliveries a year.
